HAIR IMPLANTS
MODERN TECHNIQUES TO TREAT BALDNESS
cycle to keep the head and temples covered. But with a number of us, mainly men, the hair starts to fall out increasingly fast at around 30. The hair becomes thinner and the hair line around the temples starts to recede more and more. In some cases, this leads to total baldness.
To some men, baldness gives them extra charm, but for most it means they suddenly look much older, and for them this can be problematic. It is then understandable that they want to be able to feel hair on their heads again and start contemplating a minor surgical procedure.
Hair loss with men is nearly always hereditary. The hair roots are programmed to stop producing hair from a certain age. After a pre-determined number of cycles, hair growth stops: on top of the head, the crown and forehead. The hair continues to grow on the sides of the head and this can be surgically removed and repositioned on top of the head.
Several techniques are currently available for the treatment of baldness. The technique to be applied is selected on the basis of the amount of remaining hair the patient has, where on the head it is and its quality, and of course the patients wishes. Top specialists agree that the mini- and micro-grafts yield by far the best results for bald patches.
IMPLANTS (mini- and micro-grafts)
This technique has been applied since 1959 and has long proved its worth. Over the years, this technique has been constantly refined, and more recently has led to micro-grafts with much more natural-looking hair implants.
The method is simple: the hair on the sides of the head has an exceptionally long lifespan. This hair is transplanted on the bald patches and retains the same lifespan. The result is therefore permanent.
Standard transplantations of more than ten years ago yielded good results in terms of volume, but they looked unnatural. Mini-grafts with three to ten hairs have resulted in much more natural-looking hair implants and have reduced the after-effects of surgery. This method of transplantation is ideal for large bald patches.
Mini- and micro-grafts are performed so that, by transplanting the hair and hair root to bald areas, all genetic properties of the lifespanare retained. Micro-grafts consist of one to not more than three hairs. The micro-graft method is the result of the huge progress made in implant techniques in recent years. This technique is a minor surgical procedure. |
