The cause of breast hypertrophy is often hereditary or hormonal. It is as much an aesthetic as a physical handicap, involving back pain, bra straps cutting into the skin, difficulties in finding clothes that look good and fit well and awkwardness in certain sports. Breasts that are too large often result in a degree of sagging, made worse by the tendency to stoop and round the shoulders to make them less noticeable.
THE PROCEDURE
The surgery takes place under general anaesthetic and lasts about 2 hours. During surgery, part of the breast tissue is removed and the breast is reduced to the desired shape and size. The surgeon then tightens the skin and repositions the nipple. The scar is in the shape of a reversed T, the horizontal section (in the crease below the breast) being as short as possible. The technique ensures firm breasts but does involve a relatively large scar that, in the best of cases, becomes just a thin, white and barely visible line.
In cases of toned skin (young girls in particular) and breasts that are not overly large, a single scar is sufficient around the areola that can extend vertically to under the breast.
A breast reduction is usually also a breast lift.
AFTER SURGERY
After the operation the breasts are bandaged in the shape of a bra. This stays in place for 4 days. Then, a real support bra is worn for a month. For a few days, you may experience some pulling or even pain when lifting your arms. No sport for 2 months.
We recommend that you avoid pregnancy in the first year after surgery.
Possible complications are infection or excess scarring.
Finally, you should suffer no loss of sensation in the breasts as a result of the surgery. In three-quarters of cases, breast-feeding remains possible.
IN CONCLUSION
We recommend that the surgery is performed as early as possible (as of 16 years) in order to minimise scarring. Scar development is always difficult to predict. Scars change from white and thin during the first few days to become red at the end of the first month, and eventually they fade but never entirely disappear.
After a breast reduction, your breasts will recover their natural curves enabling you to wear the clothes that previously you could only dream of wearing. With breasts that are much more in proportion to the rest of your body, you will experience a tremendous sense of relief from a new, smaller cup size, and so much lighter and freer. It will completely change your life.
You will have a greatly improved self-image and much more self-confidence.
